1-4 Facebook Phenomenon

Lately it appears like almost everyone has been sucked into the Facebook vortex. When my dad asked me to make an account for my mother I knew that Facebook had become a huge popular culture phenomenon. Facebook has seemed to attract a vast array of individuals from the elite to the mainstream pop culture crowd. I got sucked into getting an account and now I check the stupid thing every day. I snoop on other peoples pages to see what they’re up to, look up old friends and try catch up. This new way of communicating along with texting has taken away the need for a lot of our face to face human interactions.

Facebook, Myspace and texting have transcended the social networking of yesterday and made it a hugely popular and extremely easy norm for society today to communicate electronically. The majority of my generation including myself is very fond of this new way of communication. I don’t mean to sound rude, but I just don’t really like being around people that much and whatever I can do to avoid having to be around them in person is a plus for me. I get too nervous and antsy communicating face to face. These new ways of communicating have sort of enabled me to avoid social situations even more. I’m surely not the only person who feels this way and is annoyed with this problem.

The real concern for me is with our younger generation. Teenagers are trained now to communicate this way via facebook, myspace and texting. For example, I cannot sit in a room with my 15 year old niece and keep her attention from texting on her phone for more than five minutes. She has formed these habits from such a young age that she doesn’t even know she is doing this and sees no problem with it. But to be honest I do the same thing. My parent’s generation is disgusted with this and the generation after them seems to be half and half. There are still a few people holding strong that they will never join a “stupid” facebook site, but majority of the time these are the same folks who hate computers in general. I  get annoyed that I joined and sometimes honestly wish I never did. But the thing is addicting and whether we like it or not it appears it's going to be around for a while. So might as well log on and join the other millions of facebook zombies.
